Thomas T. Butterball

Thomas T. Butterball, long-time resident of Lakeveiw Animal Sanctuary, entered peacefully into eternal sleep in the loving arms of caretaker Peter Marko on January 28, 2015 at the age of 13 (an advanced age for a wild turkey whose usual life span is 5 years!). Tom came to the sanctuary as a "rescue" in 2001 when he was reported by the police as a nuisance call. It was determined that Tom had an injured foot and he was taken to Lakeview Animal Sanctuary where he was rehabilitated and released, but decided to stay.

Tom served as a very popular "ambassador" for Lakeview Animal Sanctuary for many years, greeting visitors, leading parades, appearing at many local community events, and hosting many fundraisers for the sanctuary that cares for and houses many domestic old, abused, abandoned, or unwanted animals and Tom was friends to them all. Tom also held distinction of being the only wild turkey to ever be on the ballot for Niagra Falls mayor, his nomination was withdrawn when it was thought that because of his popularity be might win!

Thomas T. Butterball loves people and interactin with them, strutting around, and "overseeing" the situation. Always accompanying Tom and holding a mirror for him to follow around and look at himself was his longtime friend Ricky Ostrom who diligently looked after our beloved friend sharing his story and facts with fans and friends. He was also an avid soccer fan and could be seen at the sanctuary "playing" with his soccer ball.

Tom was also fortunate of having a turkey companion to enjoy his years with, and the two relaxed together at the home and caretaker of Jackie Perry from AWARE, occasionally having duel appearances and events together. It was a good life.

Tom gave us all an opportunity to have an "up close and personal" relationship with one of God's wild creatures, understanding and appreciating the relationship between man and the environment. His presence will be sorely missed both at the sanctuary and upcoming events. Thomas T. Butterball will be memorialized at the upcoming Lakeview  Animal Sanctuary Spaghetti Dinner and Basket Raffle at Cambria Fire Hall on Sunday March 8th, 2015.

Memorial gifts in memory of Thomas T. Butterball, can be made to Lakeview Animal Sanctuary, 5180 Feigle Road, Pendleton, NY 14094 to help care for the many animals, friends of Thomas T. Butterball, that will peacefully live out their days there. Lakeview Animal Sanctuary is a 501 (c) organization.
